Summer in Christchurch is the warmest time of the year. With temperatures ranging from about 21°C to 23°C, summers make for the best time to take a dip in the clear waters of the city. While temperatures can sometimes go up, the ocean winds help moderate them. Summers in Christchurch see very little rainfall compared to the rest of the year making it an ideal time to visit the city. With beaches packed with people, plenty of activities and a number of wine and beer festivals, Christchurch is in full swing during the summers. While the temperatures make summers a good time to visit, they are also the most crowded time of the year. If booked in advance, summers in Christchurch can be super fun.

Autumn in Christchurch is one of the most pleasant times of the year. The temperatures come down to around 14°C to 18°C. The beautiful autumn colours and the pleasant weather invite more people to the city. Autumns are a good time to explore the outskirts of the city, maybe take a hike or go biking. Autumns are also the driest months of the year with the least amount of rainfall. This makes it all the better for outdoor adventures. Autumn also sees a high amount of tourist inflow and can be rather crowded. The month of March can be one of the busiest times of the year. If you don’t mind the crowds then autumn is a good time to visit this beautiful city.

Christchurch experiences a slightly frosty winter with daytime temperatures ranging around 11°C to 13°C and night-time temperatures going down to as low as 0°C; making the nights rather cold. The days are usually much more pleasant with good amounts of sunshine greeting the city. Christchurch receives snowfall quite frequently. While the hilly regions receive snow almost every year, the plains only receive snow every alternate year. On clear days, one can see the majestic mountains of the Southern Alps clad in fresh snow; this is popularly known as the ‘ocean to Alps’ view. With numerous skiing spots, winters make for a fun time on the slopes. Whale watching is also a popular activity in winters here. Winters are the cheapest time to visit the city.

With an array of colours taking over the horizon, spring here is exciting and full of life. Christchurch is sometimes also referred to as the ‘garden city.’ The numerous flowers and blooms make the city vibrant and colourful. The city begins to warm up again, receiving a lot more sunshine. The cold winter is long gone and the temperatures rise up to about 15°C to 17°C and remain so throughout the season. Spring is easily the most pleasant time of the year in Christchurch. With most of the crowd gone, spring is considered one of the quietest times of the year and if you like the calm this is the perfect time to visit the city.

 

While some of the mountains still carry the winter snow, one can still enjoy skiing; the waters are not too cold for a refreshing dip and the pleasant temperatures make it the perfect time to step out and explore the wilderness. Spring is easily the best time of the year to visit the city of Christchurch.
