How To Reach Santorini (Thira)

Planning A Trip To Santorini (Thira)? Here are some guidelines on how to reach Santorini (Thira)

Santorini is an island in the Aegean Sea, towards the south of the Greek mainland. It is a highly popular island especially for honeymooners and is filled with tourists almost all year round. Being an Island, the best way to reach Santorini is by sea, however, there is no direct approach from India. Santorini is famous for its pretty sunsets and views of the town on the cliffs overlooking the spectacular Aegean Sea and the Volcanic Caldera.

There is only one airport on Santorini island known as the JTR Santorini Airport. It is approximately 5.5 km away from Fira and 17 km from Oia, the 2 most popular towns in Santorini. There are direct flights to Santorini from some European countries like Rome, Paris and even London. From India, you can take a flight to Athens and then a domestic flight to Santorini. During tourist seasons there are additional charter flights that run to Santorini.

The main port of Santorini is located in Ormos, which is about 8 km from Fira. There are daily ferries from Piraeus Port near Athens and also from the other Greek Islands. The ferry ride is a comfortable journey with beautiful views of the Aegean Sea. It is a longer but cheaper route. The ferry ride takes between 5 to 7 hours depending on the type of ferry but is definitely worth experiencing at least once in your Greek trip.

Santorini is an Island and there isn't any road connection. However, you can take your car on the ferry. It is not very advisable to do so, as the fare is higher and it is much easier to just rent a car or moped at Santorini once you get there. But it is an option. From Athens, you can drive down to Piraeus Port, which is 15 km from the city centre, and then take the ferry.

The best and most convenient way to explore the Island is by renting a car or moped/quad bike. You will need an international license and you will need to be comfortable driving on the right side of the road. The island is not very large but travelling from one town to another or one beach to another is easily done with a vehicle. Once you are at the town, you can explore by foot as most of the roads are too narrow for vehicles to pass.

If you don't want to drive, you can hire a private taxi/minibus or also use the public bus service.
