Gangotri is situated at a height of 3100 meters above sea level, in the Uttarkarshi Distrcit of Uttarakhand. It can be found on the banks of sacred Bhagirathi River and is one of the Char Dhams, close to the India-Tibet border. It is one of the Char Dhams and is a significant religious destination for Hindus. The closest airport is in Dehradun (256 km away) and the closest railway station is in Rishikesh (234 km away). During the summer (April - June), tourists tend to flock here. But the town is closed off to the public during the winter months (December - March). It is well-connected to majority of the cities in and around the area via rail, road and air. Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun (250 km away) is the closest domestic airport to Gangotri and easily connectable to Delhi and other major towns around Uttarakhand. There are numerous taxi and bus options to travel between Gangotri and Jolly Grant Airport. This is one the best and most convenient way for travellers to reach their destination. Alternatively, helicopter services are also accessible.

There are frequent bus services by both state and private agencies to take tourists back and forth from Gangotri. It is well connected to other towns and cities in the area. Both Jolly Grant Airport and Rishikesh railway station are additionally well-connected to Gangotri by road. Busses are also available from ISBT Kashmiri Gate, situated at towards the end of NH 108.
