Gangotri, or the starting point of the holy River Ganga, is a secluded point located in the glaciers of Uttarakhand Himalayas. Gangotri's weather is freezing in most months, and the place remains chilly throughout majority of the year. However, the best time to travel to Gangotri is from April to June and September to October. Midsummers in Gangotri are fairly enjoyable and suitable for pilgrimages. Monsoons are characterized by hefty rain, making it a tricky time to visit. Winters bring freezing cold and not recommended for any travellers. The winter season can be extreme and relentless in Gangotri. Tourism and transportation in the area are depleted due to the crazy weather conditions, with temperatures dropping to sub zero levels. Although the weather is quite pleasant a little earlier in November, the latter months wreck havoc. Relentless snowfall leads to roads getting blocked and local life being disrupted in the area for a few months. It is not recommended to visit Gangotri in this season.

Summer (April – June)

In Gangotri, the summer season sets in by April and ends towards June. This is the best season for tourists and pilgrims alike to soak in the natural beauty of the area. The daytime sees temperatures not rising higher than 30°C. Towards the end of June though, tourists flock to Gangotri to indulge in snow-based activities like skiing, ice skating etc. Since Badrinath and Kedarnath Temples also open in summer, Gangotri sees a throng of visitors at this time who have come to circuit Char Dham.

The two-month long monsoon season in Gangotri sees heavy, torrential rainfall hitting the region. The area tends to remain relatively empty of tourism as the weather is too erratic during these months. The melted snow makes all winter sports very tricky. It is advised to check the weather forecast carefully before venturing to Gangotri during this season.
