Switzerland Weather And Best Time To Visit Switzerland
Switzerland, the country of a million picture perfect moments, beckons the eager traveler all round the year. The contemporary and cultured urban areas are juxtaposed with the green meadows and ice-clad peaks of Alps. Before you plan a trip, here's a quick weather guide to help you pick the best time to visit Switzerland, this land of cheese, chocolates and more.
Summer (June to August)
The best time to visit Switzerland is summer, which means any time from June to August. During this season, the weather is mild and it is easy to go sightseeing. The mountain passes are open, and you can experience the scenic beauty and varying colours of the country. The most picturesque and panoramic views greet you during this time of the year.
The temperature hovers around 26 degrees, and the air is clear. But yes, this is peak tourist time, so be prepared for crowds. The cool Alpine air draws visitors in flocks to the highlands of Switzerland in the summer months. The dry, south-easterly wind that blows in the higher regions makes this a breezy summer. The waterfalls look magnificent and make for great pictures with family and friends. You can attend international and local events held in Switzerland during the summer season, which are mostly themed on sports, music, movies, and art. The Lucerne Music Festival, which lasts the entire summer, is very popular.
Autumn (September & October)
It starts to get cooler by autumn, but it is a good time for hiking in the Swiss Alps. The air is colder, but the views are stunning. The mountain peaks literally take your breath away. During Autumn, you will get good deals on hotel rooms, as the peak tourist season is over. But that does not mean there won’t be tourists! There are always tourists in Switzerland.
Winter (December to April)
If you are the adventurous type, and love winter sports, the best time for you to visit Switzerland is between December and April, during the winters. The Alpine winter is charming and inviting. The snow-capped mountains look divine. Besides, Switzerland always has a white Christmas. You can enjoy snow sports, such as skiing, snowboarding and ice-skating, at various ski resorts, particularly Gstaad and St Moritz. You can also go to Val d'Anniviers, which is located in the French-speaking part of Switzerland.
And if regular winter sports are not extreme enough for you, you can always try tobogganing from Pradaschier, near Lenzerheide, to Churwalden, the world’s longest toboggan run on rails.
Shoulder Month (May)
May is off-season in Switzerland, often fairly quiet and rainy. It's a good time to be in Switzerland if you want some quiet and want to explore sights without many tourists around. Many hotels offer good deals in May. You may be able to do some hiking, although this depends on whether there is still snow on the trails.
