Itanager is named after Ita fort. Ita fort literary means fort of bricks in Ahom language. It is an old fort built in the 14th century and is said to belong to ancient religion. The most common animals found here are the musk deer, Himalayan black deer, red panda and porcupine. A rare variety of monkeys is also found here. This sanctuary houses a number of hornbills too.
