Hay-on-Wye’s population is just 2,000 people and the town has over 30 bookstores, which means there’s a bookstore for every 70 people here! Thus justifying its repute of being the most erudite town in the UK. Hay-on-Wye’s scholarly roots go back to Richard Booth, a local literature enthusiast, who launched a promotion to declare the town as an independent entity (kingdom), and even though, everyone laughed at the thought, 40 years hence, the town continues to live up to its legacy! Although you can visit this book town any time of the year, the best time to witness Hay-on-Wye in its element is to visit here during the Hay Festival from the end of May through the end of September. The weather is lovely at this time too.

December through February is very cold and may be uncomfortable for warm weather travelers. The average temperature during winters sticks between 9°C and 7°C, with rainfall of 6-8 days and snowfall occurrences of 1-3 days in a month. Winters are dull and slow for tourism in Hay-on-Wye, with not music to do, no festivals or literature events that are its highlight. The best you could do is hole up in a bookstore and while your time away reading as snow falls outside. But that's not why most people go out on vacation, so you can drop winter.
