North-Eastern Monsoon Season (December to February)

This is a dry season that lasts from December to February. The temperature ranges from 22°C to 31°C and there is almost no rain. Most tourists prefer this season to visit Colombo and other south and west coast cities. These months are best for water sports like surfing, boating and scuba diving and also for touring the city. Another specialty of the season is the popular festival of Duruthu Perahera held in the month of January. Since most tourists travel during this season, the tickets and hotels may be pricier. Therefore advance booking would be wise.
First Inter-Monsoon Season (March and April)

This is an awkward season characterized by hot-humid winds and temperatures between 25°C and 30°C. Most People find the climate quite uncomfortable during these months. For those who plan to visit during this time, try to keep your plans post sunset. The Tamil and Sinhalese New Year usually fall in this season.
South-Western Monsoon Season (May to September)

The rainy season begins slowly by mid-April and intensifies by May, making it one of the wettest months in Colombo. The temperature ranges from 25°C to 30°C. These months are not very popular among travellers thanks to the heavy rains, however, for people who love the rainy months, July and August could be fun as the rain is not as heavy during this time. One delightful advantage of this season is the cheap tickets and hotel prices.
Second Inter-Monsoon Season (October and November)

These months are quite wet in Colombo thanks to very frequent and unpredictable torrential rain. The temperature starts to cool gradually and ranges from 22°C to 30°C. This is not a very good time for water-based activities as it can be unsafe, but if the weather is good and if you get lucky then you can always craft a good holiday to tour the city. The Hindu festival of Diwali is usually celebrated during this season.
