Bhagalpur district today contains 3 subdivisions that include Kahalgaon, Naugachhia and Bhagalpur Sadar. Historically Bhagalpur can be traced back to the times of Bimbisar, around 545 BC as well as the Mauryas from 324-185 BC. Bhagalpur thrived under the influence of Harsha’s domain and the Palas of Bengal in 755 AD. Today Bhagalpur is known because of its popularity for the production of silk. It is among the biggest cities in Bihar and the best way to reach Bhagalpur is by train although visitors from abroad could access Bhagalpur by flying into Delhi or Patna and thereafter taking a train or taxi to Bhagalpur as convenient.

The roads to Bhagalpur are generally quite all right. If you are driving down from Patna to Bhagalpur you will need slightly more than 7 hours to make the distance of about 241 km via NH 31 and NH 33. The road distance from Kolkata on the other hand is 430 km. You can make the road journey from Kolkata by bus. There are air conditioned Volvo buses that ply on this stretch besides government and private buses as well. These road journeys are quite comfortable and reasonably priced. 

Bhagalpur has excellent rail connections with all the major cities in the country. These include Howrah and Delhi besides Bangalore, Kanpur and Ajmer as well as Gaya, Guwahati, Patna and Jammu Tawi among many others. Journey by rail to Kolkata from Bhagalpur takes between nine and ten hours. According to rail passengers this trip at night is very comfortable and not noisy as it is during the daytime. A rail journey from Mumbai on the other hand takes around 24 hours to cover the journey of about 1916km.

Bhagalpur does not have an airport of its own. If you wish to travel by air you can take a flight to Patna and thereafter take a taxi to Bhagalpur which will take about 7 hours to cover the distance of 241km. Patna is a busy airport and has flight connections with almost all the principal cities of India. From Patna Domestic Airport one can fly to twelve of the major cities while Terminal 2 which is meant for International and Domestic flights is used only for cargo airlines and private jets for the time being.

Getting around in Bhagalpur is not a problem. There are several options available for the tourists. First of all there are options in local transport services such as buses and towards this the Bhagalpur government offers good transport services for both local citizens and tourists. Then there are auto rickshaws, taxis and cycle rickshaws as well and all these are available fairly easily. For larger groups it is possible to hire buses and taxis in Bhagalpur.
