Situated on the western province of the country, Bentota is known for its beach and calm waters. Situated at the mouth of the River Bentota Ganga, the town encompasses some of the best Sri Lanka has to offer. Travelling to and from Bentota can be an experience in itself. Located along the coastline and at the mouth of the river, visitors witness some of the most breath-taking sights enroute to Bentota. Commuting to and from Bentota was never more easy than it is today. While the British are to thank for the Bentota Palama, the bridge that connects the town to cities like Colombo, there are more than one ways to get to Bentota. The best way though to get to Bentota is to fly to Colombo and take a taxi.

The closest international airport to Bentota is the Bandaranaike International Airport located north of Colombo. The airport is connected to many of the major cities around the world and has frequent flights to and from the country. There are buses and taxi services that operate from the airport to major cities in Sri Lanka. Visitors can either head straight to Bentota from the airport or travel to Colombo which will allow them access to the railway services as well.

Bentota is connected to the rest of the country through the Coastal Railway line that starts from Colombo and moves along the coast till Matara passing through Galle. Considered one of the most scenic journeys in the country, the ride to Bentota is quite an adventure. Moving along the coast with views of the vast sea and cutting across the River Bentota Ganga, train journeys don’t get more exciting. Although there are not many trains that run through Bentota, there are quite a few others that run through Aluthgama which is about 3.5 km from Bentota. The express train from Colombo runs almost every day of the week taking about 1 hour to complete the journey. The prices are very nominal and getting tickets are rather easy too.

Bentota is connected to Colombo through the A2 highway. The A2 highway moves along the coastline connected Bentota to numerous other cities too. Located at about 80 odd kilometres from Colombo, driving to Bentota can be good fun. There are bus services from the Colombo bus terminal that ply to Bentota every day of the week. There are different kinds of services and the prices are very nominal. The bus journey to Bentota could take around two to two and a half hours. Visitors can also hire taxis from Colombo and the prices differ based on the type of service.
