Badami is a town in the Bagalkot district of northern Karnataka. The small historical town, once the capital of the Chalukya Kings, nestles snugly in a ravine between rugged sandstone hills at an elevation of 1,922 ft. The pristine holy river called Agasthya Tirtha surrounds Badami on three sides. Badami has a rich heritage of beautiful rock cut temples and caves that are something to see.
Badami is about 511 km from the capital city of Bengaluru, 30km from Bagalkot and about 128 km from Bijapur. The town does not have an airport, but is well connected to most major cities by rail or road. The easiest way to reach Badami would be to fly to Bengaluru, which has a domestic and International flight route and then take a train to Badami. The other option would be to travel by train straight to Badami, which is connected to some major cities like Mumbai, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad.

The airports closest to Badami are Hubli at 105 km and Belgaum at about 150 km. Hubli serves flights to Bengaluru, Mumbai, Jabalpur, Chennai, Kochi and Goa, while Belgaum’s Sambre Airport serves Bengaluru. The nearest International airport is the Kempegowda International Airport at Bengaluru. There are air-conditioned airport shuttle buses from Hubli airport to the Hubli railway station, which is the closest major train station to Badami. You could also take a train from Hubli to Badami.

Badami has a small train station on the Hubli-Bijapur railway route, that is about 5 km from the heart of the town. Trains like Golgumbaz Express (Mysore-Solapur), Barmer AC Express,the SC UBL Express(Secunderabad-Hubli) and Hubli-Varanasi Weekly Express halt at Badami. Most trains passing through Bengaluru, Bijapur, Hubli and Solapur are connected to Badami. From the station at Badami, you can board a local bus to reach the bus stand and then hire an auto rickshaw to your destination.

Badami is well connected to most major cities and towns around. There are regular as well as Volvo and AC sleeper buses to Badami from Bengaluru. You could also travel by bus from Hubli, Bijapur, Dharwad and Belgaum to Badami. Or if you want to make a private road trip then hire cars with chauffeurs or rent them and drive yourself.

Badami has quite a lot of places that can be covered on foot. But there are also local buses, auto rickshaws and hired cabs you can use. Some of the significant tourist stretches are Badami, Pattadakal and Aihole and you’ll have direct KSRTC buses that tour between Badami and Aihole via Pattadakal.
