Visit Pir Matsyendranath:
Situated on the bank of the river Shipra, Pir Matsyendranath is an attractive place in Ujjain. It is near the Bhartihari Caves as well as the Gadkalika Temple. Pir Matsyendranath was a great leader among the Saivites from the Natha sect. This is a sect whose members refer to their saints as Pirs just as the Muslims do. It is understood that Pir Matsyendranath probably dated back to either the 6th or the 7th century BC.
Go boating at Ram Ghat:
Enjoy boating at the Ram Ghat where the waters of the Shipra River are placid. If you go the boating at dusk you can see the ghat light up during the sandhya aarati.
Visit the quaint Bhartrihari Caves:
It is believed that the step brother of Vikramaditya, Bhartrihari, renounced all worldly ties and worshipped in these caves. It is possible that he wrote some of his famous works here.
Participate in the grand Shipra Aarati at Ram Ghat:
The Shipra Aarati is an amazing scene, both spiritual and spectacular. You must view it at least once during your visit. Try to visit Ujjain during the Kumbh Mela if possible.
The Impressive Durgadas ki Chhatri:
Durgadas helped Maharaja Jaswant Singh to ascend the throne of Jodhpur against Aurangzeb’s wishes. He died in 1718 at Rampura and according to his wishes, his funeral was performed on the banks of the River Shipra. The Chhatri was built in memory of Durgadas.

Ujjain is predominantly a vegetarian-majority location. There are therefore hardly any restaurants that serve great non vegetarian meals. However, for visitors who love vegetarian food there are several restaurants that serve delicious Punjabi cuisine as well as Rajasthani thalis. Another great gastro-delight in this city is defined by the line of street food carts in the famous markets, that include chaat, bhalle, samosa, rabdi, masala doodh and kulfi.

Ujjain presents many stone-carved mementoes to take home. One can also shop for textiles and home art pieces. If you are fond of sarees, there are excellent Chanderi sarees that are created in Maheshwar, some 150 km from Ujjain. Sarees are a good buy since Maheshwar has a thriving market for the business in sarees. Mehendi and namkeen are other specialties of Ujjain.
