One of the most important cities in the state of Madhya Pradesh, Jabalpur has had a chequered history. The city historically has been considered a holy city from time immemorial partially because of the Narmada River acknowledged to have always been a holy river. The history of Jabalpur can be traced back to 300 BCE, during the period of Ashoka whose edicts have been found in the vicinity of Jabalpur in Rupnath, which is 84 km away.

This establishes the period of the Mauryan Empire ending in 185 BCE. The Satvahanas came next and their period ended in 220 CE. The Bodhis, Senas and then the Gupta Dynasty (320 to 550) followed. The Kalchuris came next during 6th and 7th centuries. Their descendants carried on till the power shifted to the Gondwana kings and then the Marathas who ruled from 1781 till the British East India Company took over. Tourism in Jabalpur is most interesting since there are monuments as well as natural sites for visitors. A travel guide to Jabalpur is placed below in brief.
