Braga is the 3rd largest city in Portugal and also the religious and spiritual capital of the country. In a sense one can say that it is the equivalent of what Rome is to Italy. It is steeped in deep and rich history and culture. It continues to grow in stature as a tourist hotspot. The city is best reached via air and locally via either rail or road. The transportation systems are well-connected to and from the city which makes travel that much easier. Tourism in Braga reaches its maximum around the summer season and the best time to visit is anywhere between April to October.

In terms of places to visit, they range from the historic structures with lookout points to incredibly special public gardens. This includes landmarks like the Braga Cathedral, Antigo Paco Esparal and Bom Jesus Do Monte to name a few. All in all, the city may be small in size, but has a personality and character, one that continues to see visitors return over and over again. To learn more, check out this travel guide.

By Air:

Arguably the most popular method of travel for tourists from overseas, Porto Airport is the closest stop off point for visitors looking to then get to Braga. There are multiple taxi and bus transit services available from the airport.

By Road:

A slightly longer but more affordable form of transportation, travel by road is recommended for budget travellers. There are private and public bus services to choose from as well the option of renting a car and driving down.

By Rail:

This is the best way to get to Braga as the Braga Railway Station is very well networked with the rest of the country and other parts of Europe. The journey time is shorter and more comfortable as compared to travel via road.

Braga's historic charm translates to its local cuisine as well. The local farmers market is one of the perfect places to start the day. Visitors can observe the local meats and cheeses, handcrafted and extremely unique. Local cheese sandwiches, fresh french fries and a variety of other snacks are available. Lupin Beans are a cute local delicacy and make for good eating when the munchies kick in. The Aletenjo Bread is another must try item with some meat and cheese. Chorizo is the most popular sausage dish available. All in all the food is simple and honest and is a delight to try.

Shopping is not too bad in Braga either. There are a decent combination of malls along with smaller boutique stores. Additionally, there are also a number of marketplaces that are more traditional and might be a welcome change for visitors looking for local artefacts and accessories. However, other than that, Braga is not big on shopping.
